Oral cancer

Oral cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the tissues of the mouth or throat. It can occur in any part of the oral cavity, including the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, roof or floor of the mouth, and the tonsils. Oral cancer can also affect the pharynx, which is the part of the throat that connects the mouth to the esophagus.

The most common type of oral cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, which starts in the thin, flat cells that line the mouth and throat. Other types of oral cancer include salivary gland tumors, lymphoma, and melanoma.

The exact cause of oral cancer is not known, but several factors can increase the risk of developing the disease, including tobacco and alcohol use, sun exposure, and certain viral infections, such as human papillomavirus (HPV).

Symptoms of oral cancer can include a sore in the mouth that does not heal, a lump or thickening in the mouth or throat, difficulty chewing or swallowing, a persistent sore throat, and changes in the voice. It is important to see a healthcare provider if you experience any of these symptoms.

Treatment for oral cancer typically involves surgery to remove the cancerous tissue, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The prognosis for oral cancer depends on the stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis and other factors such as the patient’s overall health and response to treatment. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve the chances of a successful outcome.
